Bestest TV: Mad Men
I’m going to say it: Mad Men is the best TV show to ever be on free television—free if you have basic cable’s AMC. Now, my parsing saves Mad Men from comparisons to The Wire, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. After a few seasons, we’ll see if it holds its own with HBO’s best. But for now, let’s just say that this year’s Emmy-nomination monster lives up to the hype. It’s an unconventional workplace drama in the spirit of HBO’s best with enough romance, intrigue and subtle humor to appeal to any elitist you know. The pacing, the characters and wrenching-while-never-predictable storylines on top of the too sly dissections of closeted sexuality, the 1960 presidential campaign and advertising world make every episode of Mad Men feel like one hour of a great movie. And really, that’s not bad for free TV.
