To Do This Weekend

Besides avoiding the nauseating American Express commercial with Ellen DeGeneres, Martin Scorsese and the digitally aged Andre Agassi, I’ll be spending this weekend trying to avoid Gonorrhea and going out in the perfect weather to some place where I’ll spend hours indoors. Here are some options:

Friday

The Bomarr Monk from the Bay Area rap/art collective Anitcon spins delicious records in the Mission at the Casablanca-alluding Laszlo Bar in the Mission. By BART: 24th Street Mission

Saturday

Ever wondered about the science behind the circus, then you are the exact kind of nerd/eleven-year old boy who will enjoy some family edutainment at the Lawrence Hall of Science. This weekend it’s Circus! Science Under the Big Top. By BART: Catch UC’s Local Shuttle at Center Street and Shattuck Avenue near the downtown Berkeley BART station. Transfer to the Hill Service Shuttle at the Hearst Mining Circle on campus.

In the mood to hear literature in a clubby enviroment, check out Wesley Gibson pal Clifford Chase at Writers With Drinks. Chase’s highly praised debut novel Winkie is about a Unabomber-like Teddy Bear. Perfect with three martinis! By BART: 24th Street Mission

In Oakland, one of Oakland’s best establishments Luka’s Taphouse hosts a reception for One Thousand Words: New Paintings by Mary Younkin. No idea how the work is, but you can’t go wrong at Luka’s. By BART: Oakland 19th Station

Sunday

Do whatever you can to avoid the Haight Ashbury Street Fair. Unless you love hippies and tourists, you’d probably have more fun hanging out around the local Target. By BART: Go anywhere else.

All Weekend

I really enjoyed the flim adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake. Kal Penn, the Indian kid from Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle can really act.

My pal Andy Alexander, the artist, says I have to see the musical Once. It has pretty stellar reviews, which is cool if you like stellarly reviewed movies. Any musical fans want to join your pal, a very heteronormative fan of musicals, at a showing?

I totally want to see “Once” — got turned on to Glenn Hansard by Pandora.com and listen to him a lot now. Let’s set something up.

Just thought I’d add that the SFMOMA has a new exhibit of sculptures by Matisse.
